Protect Your Eyes during the Great American Eclipse

With the solar eclipse on April 8 fast approaching, excitement is building for one of the most awe-inspiring celestial events. As we witness the sun’s majestic display, we must prioritize our eye health to ensure that this incredible experience leaves us with memories, not consequences.

Viewing a solar eclipse without proper protection can cause permanent damage to your eyes. Unprotected direct observation can lead to solar retinopathy, a condition where the retina is damaged by solar radiation.

Opticare Vision Centers, Dr. Young was featured on Fox19 Now, Discussing Safe Viewing Tips:

  • Regular sunglasses are not sufficient to protect your eyes during an eclipse. Use ISO-certified solar viewing glasses to watch the eclipse safely.
  • For a DIY approach, pinhole projectors are a safe, indirect way to view the eclipse. They project the sun’s image onto a surface, allowing you to watch without looking directly at the sun.
  • If you plan to use a telescope, ensure it’s equipped with a special-purpose solar filter. Viewing the eclipse through an unfiltered lens can cause severe eye injury.

Do you have questions about how to view the solar eclipse safely? Our team at Opticare Vision Center is here to help.

Whether you need advice on selecting the right solar viewing glasses or have concerns about your eye health, we’re just an appointment away.
